Edmonton Grads

Edmonton Grads

"The finest basketball team that ever stepped out on a floor." These were the words of Dr. James Naismith, the man who invented the sport of basketball. He wasn't talking about some of the classic NBA franchises but a woman's basketball team out of Edmonton.

The Edmonton Grads were a basketball team that was together between 1915 and 1940. They hold the North American record for the best winning percentage of all time.

Over the years the Grads put together a record of 522 wins and 20 losses. They won their first Canadian title in 1922 and in 1923 they won the international title. The only time they did not hold the title after 1922, was in 1940 when the team disbanded.

Between 1924 and 1936, the Grads dominated the Olympics. They won all 27 Olympic matches they played, out scoring their opponents 1863 to 297.

The Grads disbanded in 1940 after the outbreak of the Second World War. At that time, the team held 108 local, provincial, national and international titles and had been the undisputed world champions for 17 years in a row.

As the NHL trade deadline creeps up, it can only be assumed that general managers around the league will be busy. The Canadian teams throughout the league differ in their position's but all will have a similar outlook for the March deadline. From Bob Gainey and the Canadians to Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs, no matter where the teams stands change will be necessary for the teams to improve for the future.
When asked who would be the most active by the deadline, NHL follower Wally Zwarych believes that even though the Leaf's should have a fire-sale the team to watch is the Edmonton Oilers. "By March 4th, you'll see the Oilers make several moves that will improve the future of their franchise. I'd be surprised if Eric Cole and Dwayne Roloson had not been moved by the deadline." Wally believed that the Oilers would be looking to gain younger roster players that would be able to step in right away.
When the trade deadline hits it shouldn't surprise many to see both the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks stand pat. Even with his slow start Mats Sundin will help the Canucks turn their season around, and the team will get an even bigger boost when Roberto Luongo returns from injury. The Flames may make several smaller moves but do not have the cap room to make an significant deals.
The Ottawa Senators should be active by the deadline. "...Bryan Murray has to go. Both the general manager and head coach have to be held responsible for how poor the team has done so far this year." When asked if there would be any roster moves, Wally believed the Sens would have to acquire a puck moving defenceman, another offensive centre and help in goal. "Watch for them to look at either Cristobal Huet or Nikolai Khabibulin, whoever the Hawks aren't using at the time."
The Montreal Canadians should look to improve their roster and try to move some of the soon to expire contracts. Many of the Habs top players have contracts that are due to expire after the 2008-2009 season and should try to move some of these players for longer contracts. "Don't be surprised to see them move (Jaroslav) Halak for another defenceman. If I was Gainey I would definitely look at giving up whatever Tampa Bay wants in return for (Vincent) Lecavalier." Whatever the Habs decided to do, it shouldn't surprise many to see Montreal be active prior to the deadline.
Finally, the Toronto Maple Leafs should not only be one of the most active Canadian teams but one of the most active in the NHL. "The Leafs should just have a fire sale. Trade everyone to who ever will take them." Many fans believe that the organization is in the right direction but more changes need to be made before the team can be considered successful. "Nik Antropov, Pavel Kubina, Mikhail Grabovsky and Vesa Toskala are players team's may look at and at the same time players Toronto should be willing to move." The Leafs should be looking to acquire young talented forwards, puck moving young defenceman and draft picks.
With the trade deadline looming many Canadian teams will be active by March 4th. It should be a fun few weeks for hockey fans.

News out of Blue Jays Spring Training...Vernon Wells has injured his hamstring.

Wells will miss most of the spring training with a similar hamstring injury to the one he had last year.

Sources indicate that while Wells was doing a routine run around the bases he strained his left hamstring.

Last season, Wells spent time on the disabled list for an injury to the same hamstring last July.

He also suffered a fractured wrist in May, and missed 52 games overall between the two injuries.

In 2008, he hit .300 with 20 home runs and 78 RBIs.

The 30-year old is entering the second season of a seven-year, $126 million dollar contract extension.

Jays manager Cito Gaston stated that he believes that Wells may have hurt himself running the bases.

The new look Ranger's have a new bench boss for tomorrow's rematch.

John Tortorella has been announced as the 34th head coach for New York.

Sunday's loss was crushing defeat for the Rangers.

A team that needs wins down the stretch to ensure a fourth straight playoff appearance.

Renney seemed willing to settle for at least one point, apparently Glen Sather wasn't.

Tortorella joins the team after a brief stint as a analyst on TSN.

The former Tampa Bay Lightning coach has an NHL coaching record of 239 and 222.

york report- should home run record belong to aaron

"In all fairness to everybody, I just don't see how you really can do a thing like that and just say somebody isn't the record holder anymore, and let's go back to the way that it was,"
Why can't we? Above is a quote from Hank Aaron, he is discussing the possibility of Barry Bonds home run record being revoked, which would make Aaron the home run champ once again.
In a baseball era that has become overrun with steroids and cheating performers, it has almost become the "norm" for a players name to be connected to steroid use. One of such player's is slugger Barry Bonds.
Bonds made his first MLB appearance in 1986 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was with Pittsburgh where Barry made a name for himself, not so much for his ability to pound the ball out of the stadium but as an all around talented player.
When the Balco disaster arose speculation began that Bonds had used performance-enhancing drugs during a time when there was no mandatory testing. In an effort to save face, Bonds declared his innocence. Refuting that his body change was accredited to steroids, but to an increased strict regimen of bodybuilding, diet and legitimate supplements.
April 8th, 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia Hank Aaron destroyed a pitch from Dodger Al Downing to pass Babe Ruth as the all time home run leader. Aaron did so in manner that was more then proffesional.
In a time where players had more to think about then using steroids, Aaron had his own media circus to deal with. From love mail to death threats, to bigtory and racism, Aaron had more then his hands full in his hunt to hold the record.
When Bonds beat Aaron's record, Aaron appeared on the jumboscreen at AT&T park and offrered these words for the new home run leader.
"I would like to offer my congratulations to Barry Bonds on becoming baseball's career home run leader. It is a great accomplishment which required skill, longevity, and determination. Throughout the past century, the home run has held a special place in baseball and I have been privileged to hold this record for 33 of those years. I move over now and offer my best wishes to Barry and his family on this historical achievement. My hope today, as it was on that April evening in 1974, is that the achievement of this record will inspire others to chase their own dreams."
Aaron is more then a class act and deserves recognition for a record he achieved in a much different era then today. Bonds deserves more respect then what he is accredited, whether or not he cheated, he had the ability to play proffesional baseball and be one of the best in the game.
Its up for you to decide who is the real home run champ.

Marty York Assingment: Player Profile

Some Canadian children are born into a world that revolves around hockey.

Zachary Paul Zwarych was born December 16, 1993, the third of three boys and fourth of six children, into a family that eat, breathes and sleeps hockey.

Zach's initial interest in hockey started much like any other young boy who lives in the Toronto area, with a love of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He showed great progress in his ability on the ice at a young age from skating around on the backyard rink and public skating at the local arena.

He first delved into the the sport at the age of five, when his father enrolled him into Tim Horton's hockey. Tim Hortons hockey or the Timbits Minor Sports Program is a community program for local sports teams involving children aged four to eight. The program places an emphasis on learning the sport and building friendships among the participants, as reflected in the program's advertising tagline—"The First Goal is Having Fun." Zach excelled in these ranks and show a lot of promise in his hockey playing abilities.

Zachary started playing in an organized league at the age of seven. While playing house league hockey he competed hard and was more then often the better player on the ice.

Later on into his playing career he established a high skill level and love for the position of goalie. In his first full of year of playing goalie, he posted an impressive record of 16-2 record which included eight shutouts and only one game where he allowed more then two goals against. These impressive credentials earned him a call up to his local rep team, the Ajax Knights, where he has been ever since.

The Knights are just finishing their second season with Zachary as their number one goalie. In this past year, Zachary backstopped the Knights to a 25-2-3 record for the top in their league. Unfortunately, the team was defeated in the second round of the playoffs by the Pickering Panthers in the fifth game in a five game series.

When asked about how he is dealing with the defeat, he said, "It sucks. Its hard losing to a team you know is worse then you, we beat them all season. But in the playoffs we just didn't show up. Its disappointing."

However, Zachary is looking forward to upcoming tournament's in Ajax and Stouffville. "We're going to do better in the tournaments. There is only one team to look out for and that is Whitby, we tied in the regular season. Other then that we should have no problem owning the tourny's."

Many Ajax natives look forward to seeing how Zachary progress' as a hockey stud, much like they watched Minnesota Wild's Brent Burns. It's not hard to believe that one day you may watch on TV or hear on the radio...holy moly! what a goalie that Zachary Zwarych is.

V.O- Tor/Min

The Toronto Maple Leafs were back in action for the first time since the All-Star break.

Justin Pogge got the nod for the blue and white.

Things got off to a rocky start for the youngster, Oshawa Generals Alumni Cal Clutterbuck sniped a laser passed Pogge.

I bet he would want that one back.

Still Struggling Nik Antropov was swarming all around the net, but Wild Goalie Nik Backstrom was having none of it.

The Buds got on the board in the second period, as Jason Blake got his 15th of the year.

From there on out it was all Minnesota, Marc-Andre Bergeron made it 2-1.

Two minutes later it was Eric Belanger, who put it on a tee for Marc Andre Bouchard.

Finals minutes of the second, Bouchard got his second of the game on a partial break.

In the third, former Leaf Owen Nolan had the wide open net and made no mistake.

The Leafs fell to the Wild, 6-1.

Goalie Justin Pogge has been re-assigned.

Feb 10 Update

Hi I'm Andrew Zwarych with your CSM sports update...

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be back in action tonight, they're in Sunrise, Florida for a date with the Panthers.
The Panthers are looking for their third win against the Maple Leafs this season when the teams face off for the second time in eight days.
Former Panther Mike Van Ryn is doubtful for tonight's game, the Leafs defenceman was driven into the boards awkwardly against the Canadians.

It looks like Brian Burke is trying to start a fire under Nik Antropov.
Yesterday, Burke appeared on a Toronto radio station and said he saw no reason why he would offer Antropov a new contract, and he thinks its time for a change of scenery for the power forward.

The Toronto Raptors, losers of six straight, travel to Minnesota to take on the Timberwolves.
Presumably, the best matchup for tonight's game would have been Chris Bosh against Al Jefferson, but both big men will miss the game due to injury.
The Raps have won the past eight matchups against the Timberwolves.
Tip off is at 8.

The Montreal Alouettes have announced a press conference for later today where it is expected they will announce the re-signing of quarter back Anthony Calvillo. The 2008 CFL Most Outstanding Player apparently made his decision when his wife recieved a clean bill of health.

There were only two games on the ice last night,

Scott Clemennson is proving he can be a number one goalie in the NHL, he picked up his first shut out in five years in a 3-0 win over the Rangers.

The Montreal Canadians slide down the Eastern Conference continued last night, the Calgary Flames beat them 6-2.

The truth has come out, Alex Rodriguez has admitted to using steroids.
In a one and one interview with ESPN, A-Rod admitted to using banned substances between 2001 to 2003.

Troubled goaltender Ray Emery is making news yet again.
Emery has reportedly left his Russian team after being stiffed on his pay.

Fighting in hockey

The art of fighting in hockey is an established aspect of the game. Though there is criticism of fighting in the sport it cannot be argued that as of right now it is a major aspect of the game. Right now most teams have a player or players on their roster who are known strictly as the enforcers or goons who are paid to make sure the teams top players are safely able to play the game they wish. There is a "code" that is in place by the players who fight but it is not always followed which is when injuries and problems arise.
Physical contact is an allowed and practiced part of the game of hockey and during the game because of physical contact, fighting allows for players to release this intensity without more discipline handed out then a five minute penalty. Without the ability to fight in the game there would be more devastating actions that would lead to injuries, and the players who give the injuries would not have to worry about any actions taken against them by the other players. The only thing they'd have to worry about is another serious injury that they would get from a dirty hit by another player. With fighting in the game if a player is injured by a dirty hit, a fight is more then often going to ensue. There is a sense of solidarity between teammates so they all know that their teammate have their back.
There are many supporters out there that would like fighting to be banned from the sport. Fighting itself does lead to injuries. According to Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine “Fighting does cause injuries, which range from fractures of the hands and face to lacerations and eye injuries. At present, it is an endemic and ritualized blot on the reputation of the North American game.” A school board member from London, Ontario attended a London Knights game and was appalled at the reaction from the fans during the game to the number of fights that occured. He then gained support in an effort to ban fighting from the OHL. There is only one known death that is directly related to fighting in hockey

feb 3 fergy class

Hey I'm Andrew Zwarych....

The Toronto Raptors are in tough night, they'll be looking to be the first team to win in Cleveland all year. More with that is CSM's homegrown Mark Farmer...

The Raptors have been involved in plenty of trade talking lately, the newest rumors concerns the franchise Chris Bosh, Steve Frizzle has more...

Hockey is a game of passion, skill and hard hitting. Some players walk that thin line, but one guy who continues to gross it, NHL goon Denis Gauthier. From his plastic covered couch in Woodbridge, Ontario...Luca Loinacino...

The Toronto Maple Leafs are back in action tonight, they'll be looking for their third straight win.
The Leafs will be hosting the Florida Panthers.
Toronto has been on an offensive tear as of late, scoring 12 goals in the past two games.
They've needed all of those goals as their goaltending has been weak, they've allowed three goals in 14 of their last 17 games.
Jason Blake and Dominic Moore are hoping to continue their hot streak, both have registered points in their last four games.
Toronto will still be without Tomas Kaberle who is suffering from a broken hand, and will be out four weeks.
Florida has also taken consecutive wins and three of the past four meetings at the Air Canada Centre.
Puck drop is at 7:30.

From all of us here at CSM, have a good one.
