Hi I'm Andrew Zwarych and this is a CSM Sports Update...
The Pittsburgh Steelers beat up on a battered Baltimore Ravens team, securing a spot in the Superbowl with a 23-14 win. It was the Ravens 18th straight game without a bye and it showed. In the second quarter Ben Roethlisberger aired out a 65 yard pass to Santonio Holmes, who made the Ravens backfield look childish and walked in for a touchdown. Willis McGahee ran two touchdowns in for the Ravens to keep the game close, in the fourth he was carted off the field after a helmet-to-helmet hit but had movement in both his arms and legs. Troy Polamalu seeled the victory with a 40-yard interception return, just one of three interceptions on the night by Joe Flacco.
The Steelers will face the Arizona Cardinals Superbowl Sunday in Tampa Bay. The Cards were able to hold of the Eagles, 32-25. En route to Arizona's first-ever Super Bowl appearance, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald put together a historic performance. Kurt Warner and fitzgerakd hooked up nine times for 152 yards and three touchdowns, all coming in the first half. Donovan McNabb put together a remarkable comeback from 18 points to a 25-24 lead, but was unable to hit any of his recievers late in the game when it mattered. This is the Arizona Cardinal's first Super Bowl appearance, but before they moved to Arizona they had won and finish second only to the Chicago Cubs, 100 years, for longest streak without winning in professional sports, at 61.
The Toronto Raptors lost their fifth straight game 117-113, against the Phoenix Suns. Steve Nash had 18 assists, most of which were to Amare Stoudemire who finished the game with 31 points. The win snapped a two game losing streak for the Suns. Leading the way for Raps were Anthony Parker and Joey Graham, who had 26 and 22 points respectivley. The Raps have little time off, they are back at it today at two against the Atlanta Hawks.
Ryan Smyth and Milan Hejduk both joined a select group in last night's 6-2 win over the Calgary Flames. No the two did not join the mile high club, but the 300 goal club, becoming just the second set of players in NHL history to reach the milestone in the same game. Peter Budaj snapped a four-game losing streak with 38 saves in the win. Marek Svatos, Chris Stewart, Ruslan Salei and Cody McLeod also scored in the win.
Columbus downed the Vancouver Canucks 6-5 in a shootout.
Ethan Moreau had a hat trick in Edmonton's 6-3 win over Phoenix.
The Penguins shut out the Rangers 3-0, Marc-Andre Fleury had 33 saves in the win.
Second- seeded Rodger Federer defeated Italy's own Andreas Seppi, earlier this morning.
Seventh-seeded American Andy Roddick cruised into the second round at the Australian Open beating Bjorn Rehnquist .
Jelena Jankovic of Serbia beat Austria's Yvonne Meusburger advancing to the second round.
